According to a Bloomberg article, “Philippine billionaire Andrew Tan and Star Cruises Ltd. today opened their $700 million Resorts World Manila, which will double the tables in the city and may boost its casino revenue more than 120 percent.”

“‘Our expectation is this will contribute to earnings within the first year of operations,”said Kingson Sian Sian is the president of Alliance Global Group Incand happens to be one of the richest people in the country. Now he will increase the gambling rate in Manila and utilize the customer base of over 2.5 million that are attracted to the cruiseline. Star Cruises will will continue to strum in gamblers by busing them into the area in order to allow them the ability to gamble.

“The casino’s opening in a former air force base is another step in the Philippines’ effort to tap Asia’s gambling boom as it could gain revenue from the region’s high rollers, Macquarie Group Ltd. analysts said. While growth has slowed in Macau, the world’s largest gambling hub.”As Macau continue to expand, the competition offered by Manila could cause casinos to heavily compete for the business of the casusal gambler.

“…The venture, Travellers International Hotel Group Inc., opened the first floor of a three-level casino at a complex that will include hotels and a shopping mall. Resorts World Manila may earn 21 billion pesos ($430 million) in gambling revenue next year, compared with the city’s 17 billion pesos in 2008”, according to Macquarie. As the expansion of the casinos continues word of mouth by the customers will cause the business to flourish. Marketing will be key to keeping the casinos intact and on track for increasing revenue.

“…Resorts World Manila, located in front of the capital’s new airport terminal, will draw 11.1 million visitors and raise $315 million in gambling taxes over three years,” Sian said.

Lee has been one of the only Asian casino owners in the United States and currently is the only one in Mesquite, Nevada. Lee follows in the footsteps of his grandfather Joe Shoong who made a name for himself in the business world.

Before the family entered into the gambling business, Shoong moved from China to America and became one of the first Chinese American millionaires. He has been featured on the cover of Time magazine and now even has a park named after him to honor his successes. HE came to the country in 1901 and opened a National Dollar store that eventually became a chain.

Lee began his career starting out studying law. “It was what I thought that I’d want to do — live in New York City and work for a firm where you wore nice clothes and shiny shoes,” Lee said. However after a year Lee left the law side and in 1995 moved to the gambling casino capital of the United States, Las Vegas.

Lee’s parents took over a small casino when they moved and had set their sites on a nicer casino to be opened in Mesquite. The land chosen in Mesquite was right off of interstate 15 a prime location for tourists to see. The land was then priced at $20 million in the 80’s.

The family worked hard and combined all their resources and built the Eureka casino. The first casino was built in 1997 in Mesquite by the Lees was the Rancho Mesquite. It held 500 slots, one restaurant, and two bars. Next door to the casino was a hotel that they also owned the held 215 rooms.

“We built a locals casino with no locals,” said Lee. “It was a rough go.”

Soon the casino was attracting retirees who were on their way in from Utah with a short night stay at the hotel. And the rest is history.

Mesquite, Nevada has faced some difficult times. In fact, the largest casino gambling company, Black Gaming recently closed down the Oasis. This Oasis was the largest complex of casinos, hotels and restaurants in the area. Now with that competitor out of the way, some land based casinos in Mesquite are able to hold their own.

Eureka Casino Hotel in Mesquite has managed to survive the depression so far and is working hard to make it through and turn a profit. The casino is owned by the only asian to be a casino owner operator, Greg Lee. As the town of Mesquite grew, so did the casino that Lee Operated.

Black Gaming fell into the typical corporate casino trap as have many other casinos in Las Vegas. They have begun operating while in millions and sometimes billions of dollars in debt. Lee’s philosophy is that of his immigrant grandfather where he works with virtually no debt, and tries to stay within his means. This has allowed him to survive the slowly declining economy in the United States.

Lee has kept the casino running or over 12 years now, and admits that revenue is not really coming in at this time. Even so, he has managed to keep his head above the water as he continues to ride out the depression. According to the 45 year old Lee, the plans to expand the hotel and casino are on hold. The summer is the hardest time to get the ball rolling in the casino as the heat keeps tourists out of the state of Nevada. Now with the tourism already in a decline, and the summer coming to an end, it is possible that business may turn around and begin an upswing to start the new year. Lee follows in his family’s tradition of no debt by stating that it is easier to get accustomed to having more than having less.

Greektown, casinos and hotels have recently announced new promotions for their September lineup of online casino games. These new online promotions will be made available to CLUB Greektown members given them more incentive to return to the online slots.

Fortunately for the United States, there are still many engineers that exist in the country that have the innovative power to jump right into the market. “There are a substantial number of Nevada licensees with experience in the technologies, systems and management of systems that can be used for online gaming,” attorney Greg Gemignani said.

“We don’t have a public position on the bill, but we are interested observers and will continue to monitor the situation as things progress,” Las Vegas Sands Corp. spokesman Ron Reese said.

Accorsing to MGM Mirage hotel and casino spokesperson, Alan Feldman, “We have always felt it should be legalized, regulated and taxed. There is no need to create a whole new infrastructure with government oversight because it already exists in the states.”

Many other casinos see the profit for the online casino business and want in. “I believe there is probably more support for it today than there was a decade ago,” Bryan said.

Since ESPN put poker on the map, television stations have been trying to find a way to promote these gambling games along with some healthy competition. Currently Harrah’s Hotel and Casino is negotiating contracts with the dealers Union in trying to come up with a suitable agreement. Thus far in contract negotiations they have not come to any sort of agreement that has been acceptable for the dealers Union. Since the dealers Union feel that they are being treated poorly, many other unions are getting behind their struggle.

The teachers union has spoken up against Harrah’s Hotel and Casino resort in an attempt to show their support for the dealers Union in Atlantic City.

Recently, Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers wrote a letter to Harrah’s Casino resort stating, “Las Vegas is another popular venue for our meetings. However, while this stalemate continues, we will be actively seeking alternative business relationships and facilities for upcoming conventions and meetings.”

The American Federation of teachers currently has over 1.4 million members which should have a significant impact on the convention rate at Harrah’s Hotel and Casino. The letter from Weingarten continued, “Your egregious treatment of employees engaged in the legally protected right to bargain collectively has consequences.”

Weingarten completed his letter by stating, “We look forward to hearing of the fair resolution of a contract with the UAW Atlantic City dealers’ union. Until that time, our policy is to take our meeting and convention business elsewhere.”

Bondholders for Station Casinos are trying to protect themselves through the bankruptcy, where they will suffer a significant loss in investments. Bondholders recently revealed that if the bankruptcy were to happen then they would in turn file lawsuits dating back to the multibillion-dollar buyout that occurred in 2007.

According to these bondholders there holding responsible charges of bankruptcy for the buyout stating that it was the catalyst thereby causing the company to go under. In creating this preventative lawsuit the bondholders are hoping to stop creditors and decrease the risk of them losing their investments. Currently an objection has been filed by these investors with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Reno, Nevada.

At this point Station casinos is trying to prevent the committee of bondholders from investigating the buyout as well as trying to cover their own backs and be proactive about preventing lawsuits against the casinos.

According to the court filing, the committee claims that the $5.8 billion buyout goes against the Nevada uniform fraudulent act as it used to Station casinos “to the hilt on four of its most valuable properties, leaving (Station Casinos) and its creditors questionable benefit in return, while insiders of the (company) benefited immensely.”

The bondholders of the casino are within their rights if they can prove that Station casinos with fraudulent with the buyout and are no longer able to meet future obligations. This we difficult thing to prove as they have to find evidence that states that the buyout was the reason that they are without capital at this point.

On the side of the bondholders, is evidence that the buyout use red rock resort, Sunset Station, Palace Station in Boulder Station casinos as leverage against the $2.475 billion buyout.

The economy continues to affect casinos throughout the state of Nevada. Many reports have shown that larger Hotel and Casino resorts are drastically dropping their prices in order to raise the room occupancy rate is still falling below standards.

Luxury casino resorts are being forced to match the roommate of smaller economy casinos in order to stay open during this rough economic time. Although the larger casino resorts continue to complain, many small Casino resorts have shut down and file for bankruptcy as they failed to have the capital and the means to stay open during these tough times.

Such is the case in Mesquite, Nevada, where small casinos have closed down because the rate could go under compete with that of the larger casino. The town of Mesquite Nevada saw a decline in tourism by nearly 26% last year. This impacted the small town in the casino company owned by Black gaming thereby causing them to close the oasis. At the casino resort close to 500 workers were laid off impacting the small town of 20,000 people.

After hearing about an unexpected sport complex to a nearby town of Hurricane, Utah, Mayor Susan Holecheck decided to hunt down the developers of the complex and slay them to come to the small town of Mesquite. After her pitch for the city was over, Holecheck scored the building of the new complex as well as selling 864 acres of city property. This $6.3 million sale will help to generate revenue for the small town.

Now what was once known for its gambling casinos will now be known for its sports complex. The deal will be finalized this week as a 5% down payment will be due. This new insurgents of revenue will help fill the void that left one Black gaming casinos and the oasis became bankrupt, leaving hundreds of workers out of jobs.
