Vegas Advertising brings back gambling Part III

As 2002 rolled around, Las Vegas was beginning to step back up and tourism began to increase. Comedian Don Rickles then took over the Frank Sinatra spots as a more comedic spin on the commercials.

As the Don Rickles commercials continue to run and had a comedic edge to them, R&R continued to hold focus groups and generate more ideas for new advertising campaign that would draw tourists back to the casinos. They even held a contest where locals could put in their bids for advertising ideas for the city. “We got some toe-curling stuff,” R&R Executive Vice President Rob Dondero said. “It validated our theory that people have their own preconceived notions and perceptions about Vegas and wanted to share them.”

This was the first step of the coined phrase that we all relate to Las Vegas as to copywriters Jeff Candido and Jason Hoff, began creating slogans in an effort to promote the gambling town. It was also this twentysomething pair of copywriters who came up with the idea “What Happens Here, Stays Here.”

These two copywriters pitched their ideas to their boss, Randy Snow along with many other taglines for perusal. Little by little the other phrases were knocked out until the only one that remained was theirs. Even once they decided on it they weren’t quite sure that was going to be the slogan they return to gamblers to the casinos. “We’re ad guys, so we second-guess ourselves all the time,” Snow said. “Until it’s out there, you never really know.”

As the ideas passed through the focus groups, they receive positive reinforcement that this catchphrase could be something that appeals to the masses. In another attempt to do a beta test, they placed these ads in the San Francisco shopping mall in January 2003. Their biggest concern was that their target audience of women would not enjoy the ads and would therefore not encourage them to visit Las Vegas. On the contrary, women that stop by this advertisement stated that they felt that showed the women as empowered and therefore they like the idea.

As the tagline hit the stands, USA Today consumer poll showed it as the nation’s most effective ad message. This caused the casino gambling town to beat out big names such as Coca-Cola, Campbell Soup and Miller light. It looks like we’ll be seeing these signs again soon.

Since that time, Las Vegas grew tired of being known for only having casinos and began to expand their entertainment industry by bringing in such large acts as the rat pack and Wayne Newton. Soon Las Vegas became known as a place for entertainment as well as casino gambling.

After many years of marketing the casino aspect of Las Vegas, advertisers began to seek out new ways to reach the public that didn’t include gambling. Brochures were stuffed with beautiful pictures of pools and city views as well as showgirls and food. All of these things captured light outside of the casino showing that Las Vegas had much more to offer. As Atlantic City and Biloxi Mississippi grew to be known as gambling towns, the lure of Las Vegas was dependent on other methods of attracting tourists.

The focus this time left the casinos and made use of the warm climate as a backdrop to draw in tourists from colder areas. 2001 became a difficult year with the disastrous 9/11 episode that caused a furor in tourists to travel. In an effort to be sensitive to the situation, they decided to run more serious ads focusing on the live entertainment that Vegas had offer.

Las Vegas casinos have struggled along with other businesses throughout the tough economy and now they’re trying to reinvent themselves through marketing and advertising and by possibly bringing back the old slogans that made the city popular. The phrase “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”became a pop-culture line used by kids and adults all around the world. This catchy phrase allowed its users to apply to many situations that need not be spoken of the others.

As the difficult times hit the Las Vegas casinos and hotels, they tried to be sensitive to the situation but still address tourists and try to draw them back to the casinos. New phrases such as “Vegas right now”and “crazy times call for crazy fun”became some of the slogans that recognized the difficult times as well as trying to draw people back.

Since the slogan worked so well the first time and encourage people to join the city lights and entertainment of the casinos as their tourist destination, Las Vegas once again is dusting off the old slogan and placing it back into the advertising campaign.

With movies such as The Hangover, centered around a group of guys who went to Las Vegas for a bachelor party, Las Vegas is once again being looked at is the place to go to party, gamble and have fun.

The Las Vegas Logan of ”what happens in Vegas…” was a bold statement at the time but true in tourists to a more raw side of the Las Vegas strip casinos. It brought about endless ideas of wacky and crazy times that can be had in Las Vegas. This slogan went in a completely different direction than its previous advertising campaigns.

Years ago Las Vegas marketing consisted of advertising that they were casinos in the area. These casinos along with hotels gave gamblers and tourists a place to go for gambling entertainment and a place to stay.

Taiwan has been fighting a difficult battle in trying to get casinos in the outlying islands of Penghu. These islands are a mere 141 km² long and consist of 90 small islands within this one area. Recently there has been a debate on whether or not casinos would be allowed in this small area as an offering for Taiwan.

Many locals were uneasy about putting in a casino is close to home and did not want these islands occupied for offshore betting for other online casinos. Since the time that vote, to gambling related companies Astro Corporation Firich Enterprises Co. have been fighting to bring their stocks up. These gambling related companies were preying on the positive vote to allow casinos and these islands. Since the vote went against them, they will need a new idea to create casinos in Taiwan.

Out of the residence that voted, 56% of them voted down the idea of putting casinos in the islands. The most beneficial by September 26 of this year and could possibly buy the residence time before the issue resurfaces. The next opportunity for the casino companies to repeal this referendum would not be until 2012.

Other companies are planning to utilize this land for casinos are also at a loss as AMZ Holdings Plc owns 11 hectares of land that was set aside for the specific purpose of adding casinos. The land was already purchased and just ready for licensing when the vote occurred.

Taiwan has approved the use of casinos in its outlying islands pending the approval of the residents that live there. Three of the islands Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu were the ones awaiting approval. Since the residents have voted, they have been denied the casinos in those islands. As casino gambling continues to grow throughout the world, these companies will have to wait for the perfect time to expand into Taiwan.

Apollo management is one such company that is looking to capitalize on opportunities that are currently made available in the casino industry. Fontainebleau is a casino property that currently sits in bankruptcy court under piles of paperwork, therefore making it a likely candidate for acquisition by a company looking to start their own casino brand.

To purchase an existing casino at a much lower rate would be the ideal way to open up a business, especially one that is so technologically advanced. The economy provides a good time to purchase these properties and reopen them with minimal cost to the investor.

The plan for the investors has now gone from buying shares or equity with in the casino industry to purchasing chunks of debt to help bail the casino property out and prevent them from entering bankruptcy court. If enough companies support the casino by buying out debt they will then own portions of that casino as part of an investment for future revenue generating purposes.

Share options in equity have become a less viable source for investors as there is no promise of return through the casino properties. Now through partial ownership of the company’s debt, it is the debtors who are first repaid in a bankruptcy filing. Therefore by purchasing some debt they are guaranteeing themselves a cut of the money if things turn sour. This also gives those who hold the majority of the debt the most power and decision-making processes especially over creditors when dealing with bankruptcy.

We have seen this happen with many casinos already as Harrah’s entertainment purchased debt from Planet Hollywood Casino’s therefore giving Harrah’s some stock in the company. In the event that Planet Hollywood Casino’s need to file for bankruptcy, Harrah’s will capitalize on their mounting debt and utilize their current money to add on to the city center using the pre-existing Planet Hollywood structure.

The recession that we are currently in came on unexpectedly and caused varying results in the casino industry for lenders supply and demand. In the past, Las Vegas property was a hot commodity and within the past 10 to 15 years many investors have been trying to get a chunk of the pie has been seen as a huge moneymaker and revenue generator throughout the world. The Las Vegas strip, famous for its gambling and bright city lights has been an icon for the United States and drawn in billions of gamblers and billions of dollars a year.

Before the recession, investors were looking to buy into these gambling venues as they seem to be strong enough to withhold any financial crisis. Now that the recession has hit, investors are fearful about the future of land-based casinos since they now see that much like other businesses they are struggling in a time when people are afraid to spend money.

Since the possibility of an upturn for the future is still in the air, many lending companies are trying to capitalize on future moneymaking opportunities. In the famed phrase of buy low sell high, investors are looking to purchase fragments of casinos while they’re at their weakest moment. Many land-based casinos are looking for an opportunity to be bailed out of their mounting debt that has caused them in many cases to file for bankruptcy.

As we have seen some of the big brands purchasing smaller casinos and properties at a very low rate in order to bail a company out of bankruptcy, these are the perfect times to capitalize on these investments. With the current status of the economy today, purchasing Casino property for a few million dollars will help relieve the company of endless paperwork in a bankruptcy filing and could open up the possibility for revitalizing casinos that were on their last legs.
